Where is your wilderness?

1 Corinthians 10:13

Context:

…Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall. No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.

[It would behoove the reader to read what came before, what came after, written to whom, when, and for what reason].

1 For, brothers, I don’t want you to miss the significance of what happened to our fathers. All of them were guided by the pillar of cloud, and they all passed through the sea, ²and in connection with the cloud and with the sea they all immersed themselves into Moshe, ³also they all ate the same food from the Spirit, ⁴and they all drank the same drink from the Spirit — for they drank from a Spirit-sent Rock which followed them, and that Rock was the Messiah. ⁵Yet with the majority of them God was not pleased, so their bodies were strewn across the desert.

⁶Now these things took place as prefigurative historical events, warning us not to set our hearts on evil things as they did. ⁷Don’t be idolaters, as some of them were — as the Tanakh puts it, “The people sat down to eat and drink, then got up to indulge in revelry.”^[a] ⁸And let us not engage in sexual immorality, as some of them did, with the consequence that 23,000 died in a single day. ⁹And let us not put the Messiah to the test, as some of them did, and were destroyed by snakes. ¹⁰And don’t grumble, as some of them did, and were destroyed by the Destroying Angel.

¹¹These things happened to them as prefigurative historical events, and they were written down as a warning to us who are living in the acharit-hayamim. ¹²Therefore, let anyone who thinks he is standing up be careful not to fall! ¹³No temptation has seized you beyond what people normally experience, and God can be trusted not to allow you to be tempted beyond what you can bear. On the contrary, along with the temptation he will also provide the way out, so that you will be able to endure.

¹⁴Therefore, my dear friends, run from idolatry! ¹⁵I speak to you as sensible people; judge for yourselves what I am saying. ¹⁶The “cup of blessing” over which we make the b’rakhah — isn’t it a sharing in the bloody sacrificial death of the Messiah? The bread we break, isn’t it a sharing in the body of the Messiah? ¹⁷Because there is one loaf of bread, we who are many constitute one body, since we all partake of the one loaf of bread. ¹⁸Look at physical Isra’el: don’t those who eat the sacrifices participate in the altar? ¹⁹So, what am I saying? That food sacrificed to idols has any significance in itself? or that an idol has significance in itself? ²⁰No, what I am saying is that the things which pagans sacrifice, they sacrifice not to God but to demons; and I don’t want you to become sharers of the demons! ²¹You can’t drink both a cup of the Lord and a cup of demons, you can’t partake in both a meal of the Lord and a meal of demons. ²²Or are we trying to make the Lord jealous? We aren’t stronger than he is, are we?

²³“Everything is permitted,” you say? Maybe, but not everything is helpful. “Everything is permitted?” Maybe, but not everything is edifying. ²⁴No one should be looking out for his own interests, but for those of his fellow. ²⁵Eat whatever is sold in the meat market without raising questions of conscience, ²⁶for the earth and everything in it belong to the Lord.^[b] ²⁷If some unbeliever invites you to a meal, and you want to go, eat whatever is put in front of you without raising questions of conscience. ²⁸But if someone says to you, “This meat was offered as a sacrifice,” then don’t eat it, out of consideration for the person who pointed it out and also for conscience’s sake — ²⁹however, I don’t mean your conscience but that of the other person. You say, “Why should my freedom be determined by someone else’s conscience? ³⁰If I participate with thankfulness, why am I criticized over something for which I myself bless God?” ³¹Well, whatever you do, whether it’s eating or drinking or anything else, do it all so as to bring glory to God. ³²Do not be an obstacle to anyone — not to Jews, not to Gentiles, and not to God’s Messianic Community. ³³Just as I try to please everyone in everything I do, not looking out for my own interests but for those of the many, so that they may be saved;

There isn’t any temptation that you have experienced which is unusual for humans. God, who faithfully keeps his promises, will not allow you to be tempted beyond your power to resist. But when you are tempted, he will also give you the ability to endure the temptation as your way of escape.

Brief commentary by Ken Pullen

In context, chapter 10 of Apostle Paul’s first letter to the church at Corinth, a church lost in its way enduring many trials, temptations and tribulation and grieving the Spirit greatly — the first 15 verses of chapter 10 pertain to Israel in the wilderness as a warning example. There is no affliction, no problem, no experience or situation in life happening to anyone, or which has happened, or will happen, which is not given in Scripture somewhere as an example for us — instruction for us how to walk, stand, and live for and with God and Jesus. To better understand 1 Corinthians 10:13 it is my prayer everyone reading this will read chapter 10 in its entirety.

A verse, a thought is merely one small part of the foundational roots which not only feed a living tree but support it and keep it grounded when the storms of life erupt and attempt to break it down and destroy it. One verse is but one small part of the whole and as such one verse can never be removed and altered to be anything other than it really is — one part of the complete root, the whole living tree. Sadly, in the days of darkness which we live people all too often attempt to make a rearranged words verse totally removed from the root system, totally removed from the living tree sustain on its own and kept alive by a corrupt and perverted earthly master who has a profane agenda, living to appease the majority and gain favor among men and women rather than living to gain favor with God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit by preserving the whole of the inerrant word of God.

Do you reside in the words and teachings of this world mingled in and corrupting the inerrant word of God? Or do you live as a true believer seeking to understand and then live in obedience, trusting, the complete word of God?

Do you desire to obey and receive the eternal reward?

Or live in appeasement and continue on in idol worship and false teachings pretending to practice and believe the words of the Bible?

Will you come to the understanding God will not tempt you more than you can bear and will give you a way out — but you must decide and choose Him, His Son, and His inerrant word to remove yourself from wandering lost in the wilderness, even if you think your church, your pastor, the denomination you’ve been following is the promised land!

God’s word is filled with examples for us to learn, keep in our hearts, and better equip us for daily life on this sinful earth [made sinful by the self-will and choices people make every moment of every day].

Will we learn from the examples of those lost in the wilderness?

Or will we remain lost, with itching ears, turning to fables and the words of a ill-taught pastor [from a modern-day theology school where the impetus is to argue and dissent and disavow the truths of the word of God] over the inerrant word of God?

You choose.

It’s your eternity.

I know my choices — now it’s up to you to make yours and live accordingly.

Matthew Henry’s Concise Commentary

1 Corinthians 10:6-14 Carnal desires gain strength by indulgence, therefore should be checked in their first rise. Let us fear the sins of Israel, if we would shun their plagues. And it is but just to fear, that such as tempt Christ, will be left by him in the power of the old serpent. Murmuring against God’s disposals and commands, greatly provokes him. Nothing in Scripture is written in vain; and it is our wisdom and duty to learn from it. Others have fallen, and so may we. The Christian’s security against sin is distrust of himself. God has not promised to keep us from falling, if we do not look to ourselves. To this word of caution, a word of comfort is added. Others have the like burdens, and the like temptations: what they bear up under, and break through, we may also. God is wise as well as faithful, and will make our burdens according to our strength. He knows what we can bear. He will make a way to escape; he will deliver either from the trial itself, or at least the mischief of it. We have full encouragement to flee from sin, and to be faithful to God. We cannot fall by temptation, if we cleave fast to him. Whether the world smiles or frowns, it is an enemy; but believers shall be strengthened to overcome it, with all its terrors and enticements. The fear of the Lord, put into their hearts, will be the great means of safety.

Thoughts on Today’s Verse

What marvellous words of encouragement are couched throughout Scripture and here we discover God’s sufficient grace is available to all His children in the midst of the various trials and temptations that we all have to face during our earthly sojourn.

God does not promise to keep our lives free from difficulties and danger. He does not pledge to exempt us from fiery trials and troublesome temptations – nor even to prevent persecution, but He does undertake to limit its intensity and to provide a way of escape, so that we may be able to bear it.

These are truly heartening words that have helped to bring consolation and comfort to generations of believers – young and old, who have clung to this precious promise as a spiritual life-line, knowing that His grace is sufficient for all eventualities and that His sufficient grace will expand and multiply to encompass every and all temptations, trials and tribulations that we may be called upon to endure in this life.

This particular verse is preceded by a section that uses Israel wilderness wanderings as a witness and warning to the church. Israel was saved out of Egypt’s oppression by grace through faith in God’s word. And all who obeyed and applied the blood of the Passover lamb were passed over by the angel of death. Like Israel we too have been saved by grace through faith in God’s Word and cleansed by the blood of the perfect Lamb of God, Who takes away the sin of the world and triumphed over death – for all who trust in Him.

But following their miraculous escape from slavery in Egypt and God’s covenant to provide for all their needs, some turned away from the God of their salvation and became idolotors. Some turned to sexual immorality and some grumbled, complained and spoke evil against the Lord – they did not trust God to provide for their needs and Paul used Israel’s lack of faith in the wilderness as a warning to the Church against unbelief.

God’s promises to Israel and those to the Church stand fast for ever and ever. And God has promised that no temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, Who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide a way of escape, so that you will be able to endure it.

Let us never forget that the temptations and trials in our lives are no different from what others experience – and God is faithful and has promised that He will not allow the temptation to be more than we can bear – but in His grace will provide a way out of it, so that we can endure it.

My Prayer

Dear heavenly Father, thank You for Jesus Who understands what it is like to be tempted in life. Thank You that He is able to sympathise with all our weaknesses. Thank You that there is no temptation that I have to face that is not common to the human race.. and thank You that You have promised to provide a way of escape, by grace through faith in Christ.. when trial come my way. AMEN
