Day 10: I am the First and I am the Last
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!
The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.” Selah
(Psalm 46:1, 10-11)

Today’s Scripture Reading: Isaiah 44:1-8
Morning Meditation:
The LORD of hosts is the God of absolute sovereignty and overwhelming power. He is the self-existent and self-sufficient Lord of all the hosts of heaven and earth. The Holy One of Israel is the God of the whole earth (Isaiah 54:5). He is the everlasting One who is from eternity past; and, as such, He is not bound by time but is the Master of time. Because He exists outside of our time, He can proclaim things before they happen. “I am the LORD, that is My name; and My glory I will not give to another, nor My praise to carved images. Behold, the former things have come to pass, and new things I declare; before they spring forth I tell you of them” (Isaiah 42:8, 9). The God we trust is God alone. Besides Him there is no other God. This should be a great comfort to us to know that the Lord our God has been sovereignly guiding history and will bring all things to their appointed end. “Who has performed and done it, calling the generations from the beginning? ‘I, the LORD, am the first, and with the last I am He” (Isaiah 41:4).
When we know God for who He really is and understand His authority and sovereignty over everything – including time – we realize we have nothing to fear. This is an encouragement in seasons of trial and pain, to know that the One who is watching over all of creation and directing its course according to His divine will and purpose, has an appointed time for the end of our suffering. “And lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20b). His ever-watchful compassionate and caring eyes are upon His children for their everlasting good. He will not even suffer a hair on our head be harmed till His purposes are accomplished (Luke 21:18). May His perfect love for us cast out all fear (1 John 4:18). “Now I tell you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe that I am He” (John 13:19).
“Now see that I, even I am He,
and there is no God besides Me;
I kill and I make alive; I wound and I heal;
nor is there any who can deliver from My hand.”
(Deuteronomy 32:39)
Afternoon Devotion:
We are witnesses to the truth that there is no other God besides Jehovah, the Holy One of Israel. He is the Alpha and Omega, the beginning of all things and their end (Revelation 1:8). “You are My witnesses,” says the LORD, “And My servant whom I have chosen, that you may know and believe Me, and understand that I am He. Before Me there was no God formed, nor shall there be after Me. I, even I, am the LORD, and besides Me there is no savior” (Isaiah 43:10 , 11). Throughout all time and history, He is the Almighty God. Jesus is the strong and mighty foundation we stand upon (1 Corinthians 3:11). He is the same yesterday and today and forever (Hebrews 13:8). If we believe this, we will never be moved. “You are My witnesses. Is there a God besides Me? Indeed there is no other Rock; I know not one” (Isaiah 44:8b).
When we begin to see our Savior as the mighty God He is, then we realize that we are safe in His protecting hand. He is Jehovah Sabaoth, our mighty warrior and defender. The higher our thoughts are raised to think more wondrously of our glorious Lord, the stronger our sense of security, and the weaker our fears will be. May we drink deeply from the well of the Father’s abounding love today as we gaze intently into Jesus’ wonderful face and let the Spirit who is within us wash all our anxieties away in the fountain of His eternal love. “Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me, and know my anxieties; and see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting” (Psalm 139:23, 24).
“And He said to me, “It is done!
I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End.
I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely
to him who thirsts.”
(Revelation 21:6)
Evening Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
“I will love You, O LORD, my strength.
The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer,
my God, my strength, in whom I will trust;
my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
I will call upon the LORD,
who is worthy to be praised;
so shall I be saved from my enemies.”
(Psalm 18:1-3)
“He sent from above, He took me;
He drew me out of many waters.
The LORD was my support.
He also brought me out into a broad place;
He delivered me because He delighted in me.
For who is God, except the LORD?
And who is a rock, except our God?
It is God who arms me with strength,
and makes my way perfect.
You have given me the shield of Your salvation;
Your right hand has held me up,
Your gentleness has made me great.
You enlarged my path under me,
so my feet did not slip.
You have armed me with strength for the battle.
The LORD lives!
Blessed be my Rock!
Let the God of my salvation be exalted.
Therefore I will give thanks to You, O LORD,
and sing the praises of Your name.”
(Psalm 18:16, 18b-19, 31-32, 35-36, 39 46, 49)
We bow before Your infinite majesty
and glorify Your mighty and marvelous name,
Lord Jesus. Amen.
