Psalm 2 reference aids with Blue Letter Bible

The second Psalm gives the order of the establishment of the kingdom.

It is in six parts:

1.) The rage of the Gentiles (note heathen always refers to Gentiles), the vain imagination of “the people” (the Jews), and the antagonism of rulers against Jehovah Elyon’s anointed (verses 1-3).

The inspired interpretation of this is in Acts 4:25-28, which asserts its fulfilment in the crucifixion of Yeshua, our Lord Jesus Christ.

2.) The derision of Jehovah Elyon (verse 4) that men should suppose it possible to set aside His covenant (2 Samuel 7:8-17), and oath (Psalm 89:34-37).

3.) The vexation (verse 5) fulfilled, first in the destruction of Jerusalem, A.D. 70; and in the final dispersion of the Jews at that time; and to be fulfilled more completely in the tribulation (Matthew 24:29) which immediately precedes the return of the King (Matthew 24:30).

4.) The establishment of the rejected King upon Zion (verse 6).

5.) The subjection of the earth to the King’s rule (verses 7-9).

6.) The present appeal to the world-powers (verses 10-12).

The word “trust” (verse 12) is the characteristic Older Testament word for the Newer Testament words “faith” and “believe.” It occurs 152 times in the Older Testament, and is the rendering of Hebrew words signifying “to take refuge” (Ruth 2:12), and “to lean on” (Psalm 56:3), and “to roll on” (Psalm 22: 8), and “to stay upon” (Job 35:14).

See Psalm 8 next in order of the Messianic Psalms. Note Psalms 2; 8; 16; 22; 23; 24; 40; 41; 45; 68; 69; 72; 89; 102; 110; and 118 are classed as Messianic, although it is not questioned that many other Psalms refer to Yeshua, Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour.

Psalm 2

1 Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?

2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying,

3 Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.

4 He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.

5 Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure.

6 Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.

7 I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.

8 Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.

9 Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.

10 Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth.

11 Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling.

12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.
