If you had to sum your life up in one sentence, what would it be? What would be an accurate one-sentence description of your life, the way it is now?

The Apostle Paul had an amazing one-sentence summation of his life, found in Philippians 1:21:

For me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.

Wow! That’s saying something, isn’t it? Could you say the same thing about your life? Fill in the blank here:

For me, to live is __________________.

In all honesty, what would you have to put in the blank? For me to live is to earn lots of money so I can buy the things I want and live like I want to. That certainly is a common one today. For me to live is my family; I love my family and everything I do is for them. Well, certainly that’s more admirable than living for things, but is it enough? For me to live is work. For me to live is happiness and contentment. For me to live is fame and success. For me to live is acceptance and being loved. These are just some of the ways people today fill in that blank. How about you?

What does it mean to say For me to live is Christ? It means that the central focus of your existence is Jesus: Loving him, pleasing him, all areas of your life under his control. Can you say that along with the Apostle Paul? I want to be able to honestly sum my life up that way, don’t you?

And when we can honestly say For me to live is Christ, then we can truthfully say that to die is gain. If Christ is not the central reason for our living, then death surely won’t seem like gain. For most people, to die is terrible. To die is the worst thing that can happen to you. To die is fearful and frightening.

Do you view dying as a way for you to gain? Not that we need to desire death or wish for it; that wouldn’t be normal. But when Christ is our life, then death just means good things for us, for it will bring us into his presence where we can see his face. Does that thought get you excited?

What is the summation of your life-in one sentence? It’s a good way to check up and see if you have your priorities straight.
