A new art exhibit featured at a Manhattan Catholic Church suggesting that God is transsexual has divided the faithful, as some praise the exhibit as accepting while others argue it runs counter to Catholic Church teaching.

“God is Trans: A Queer Spiritual Journey,” an art exhibit created by Adah Unachukwu ” featured at the Church of St. Paul the Apostle, “maps the queer spiritual journey by three significant points: Sacrifice, Identity and Communion,” according to the New York Post.  Through sacrifice, a person is encouraged to “shed and old life and personhood” so as to focus on spiritual growth and needs. “There is no devil,” Unachukwu explains in the exhibit,”just past selves.”

Unachukwu further goes on to explain that “Identity” is the most impactful portion of the exhibit, before identifying “Communion” as a “spiritual home” that places God and mortal beings on the “same plane to speak to one another.”

“The church should not be promoting this,” a parishioner told the New York Post of the exhibit. “I understand there are transgender people. I pray for all people but enough is enough. It seems like they are trying to force the agenda on others,” the parishioner continued. (RELATED: Trans Activist Claims ‘God Made Me In Her Image’)

“The queer community has been accepted here for a long time now,” Bill O’Connor, 79, stated of the exhibit. “It’s wonderful having this here and a wonderful church. This is a place of welcome,”O’Connor added, according to the New York Post.  “It’s also a place to question one’s own path.

In 2019, the Vatican issued a statement in regards to transgender ideology, calling for the faithful to treat trans people with love and kindness while rejecting the idea that biological sex can or should be changed. (RELATED: Pope Francis Declares ‘Gender Ideology’ As ‘Dangerous’ To Civilization)

“In fact, it is from [their] sex that the human person receives the characteristics which, on the biological, psychological and spiritual levels, make that person a man or a woman, and thereby largely condition his or her progress towards maturity and insertion into society,” the statement offered.

While the Vatican officially opposes transgenderism — particularly that of sexual reassignment surgeries — it has conceded that views on transgenderism can vary from parish to parish, the New York Post reported. A spokesman for the Archdiocese of New York told the outlet he was not aware of the exhibit.
