Does God Love All People the Same Way?

According to the 2025 State of Theology survey, the overwhelming majority of evangelicals believe that God loves all people the same way.

But are they right?

It may seem harmless, or even comforting, to say that God loves all people the same way. After all, many Christians regularly hear the statement, “God loves you unconditionally.”

Yet this idea masks a serious theological error with devastating consequences. While God is benevolent toward all of His creation, He has an exclusive, saving love for those whom He has redeemed in Christ.

The danger in believing that God loves everyone in the same way is subtle but significant. It can lead people to wrongly assume that God is indifferent to evil and unoffended by sin, leading many to believe that repentance is unnecessary and that salvation is irrelevant.

Yet there is hope. The true gospel of God’s undeserved love in Christ is incomparably better than the empty idea that God loves everyone arbitrarily. By His grace, God loves us enough to convict us of sin and powerfully transform us in Christ for our good and His glory.

Key findings such as this are why The State of Theology exists: to call out the common false ideas influencing the church so Christians can be vigilant and can respond with the truth.
