ACP — A Crooked Path
by Ken Pullen
IT’S THE WORD.
It’s the God-breathed living word. The Spirit of God, His words, from His Mind, from His Heart contained within and on the pages of the Holy Scriptures.
Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
2 Timothy 3:12-17 — English Standard Version
You may not been taught and learned the Scriptures, being acquainted with them from childhood. You may not have had the scales removed from your eyes and your heart on fire for the Lord until you were 88 years old! You may be of any age of reason, seeking, thinking, desiring to know the truth. Desiring to know God and Jesus. Desiring to know how one can obtain eternal life.
All answers to any and every question any person at any time in history could come up with, no matter the person, no matter their rank, position, age, past or present can have every question answered within the pages and words of the word of God. Which also is the only book on earth that tells us plainly, openly what the future holds and will be.
It was given to us by God. For us.
As a lamp unto our feet to guide us, instruct us, keep us on this path of life.
No other book, no other words on earth can compare.
It isn’t our words, which we spew, pour out like a never-ending stream. Some of us like a flooded stream after a long hard rain. It isn’t the words of some psycho-babble on air TV personality telling you their solution for what ails you, the person or people sitting on the chairs opposite them, or anyone in the television studio audience. It isn’t the words of anyone on TV, in films, ready to entertain and distract. Or, the same in a pulpit in what passes for a “Christian church” in these times.
Nor is it any church in which the message is do you “feel good” about yourself, about life here on earth? If the church, the pastors are not preaching from the word? Not Bible-centered? Bible-focused? Bible-preaching and teaching? Expository preaching directly, completely from the inerrant word of God? And it is a place where entertainment? Feeling good about yourself while there and upon leaving is its main emphasis? Theatrics from the stage or pulpit? And you are not being fed from the word of God? The pastor, preacher, minister is not openly praying for the Holy Spirit to give him the words in which to be led? He rather relies on his prepared notes, his antidotes, jokes, illustrations, stories and presents nothing but worldly pablum and psychology? Or prosperity? Or any other unsound doctrines?
Then you need to seriously pray about and seek a church, a pastor that has a heart on fire for Jesus and the word of God.
A place, pastors who preach…
…from the word.
Be bold enough to go to a pastor not preaching from God’s word, not providing Bible-centered expository preaching and in a loving Christian manner let him know you desire Bible-centered, Bible-focused preaching and teaching. Not worldly things. Not entertainment. Not theatrics and jokes, illustrations and stories and worldly psychology. Let your pastor know you have a burning desire to hear and know God’s word and that only comes from reading from the Holy Bible and preaching on what is contained in all of the Holy Bible. From Genesis 1 to Revelation 22:21 not adding anything, not omitting anything.
And if he imagines himself greater than you? Greater than God’s words? And he does not humble himself and realize his error? Then FLEE! Flee from that place! Flee from that denomination even if it is the only thing you know, were raised in, were led to by another person. Flee from the hollow halls of false teachings and unsound doctrines! Flee and pray for the Holy Spirit to show you the way to a living in the Spirit Bible-teaching, Bible-preaching, Bible-centered, Bible-founded and living church body. It is better to sever and remove yourself from a bad tree bearing bad fruit, even if it has been the only tree you’ve known than to allow your spirit, your soul to be misled, starved, fed upon that bad fruit.
It may not be easy. Being a true disciple isn’t easy. Never says anywhere it would be. It may not be easy but there are churches as described above, Bible-centered and preaching. Find one if you are going or have been a part of a church that is dead. A dead tree. A tree bearing only spoiled, decayed bad fruit which appears like it is a place of light — if not preaching every sermon from the word? Making the word of God center and foremost? — then it is not a good fruit bearing place.
Eternity depends on being nourished well and from the right well, from the right vineyard, from the right fruit trees.
Do not linger where there is drought, fouled water, sweet tasting grapes which in truth are malnourishing only lead to death, or an orchard where it may appear lovely but the trees are infected, dying and produce only bad fruit.
It may take time (it took me almost 10 years to find an alive in the Spirit, Bible-centered, Bible-preaching, Bible-founded and focused church knowing and using the whole word of God). My wife and I pass 14 other churches on the way to the one we were led to, finally found, attend, take part in and became members of.
Don’t be lazy. Complacent.
Search the Scriptures. Study intently and deeply. Knowing and using the resources at hand. Using first and foremost the word of God. Cross-referencing within the word. Learning the word. Having the word live within your heart.
It isn’t the words within the books written by men and women. It isn’t all the textbooks, how-to books, self-help books, do this then do that and this will happen full of dung books.
It isn’t the words of man, nor the words of woman, nor the words of children.
IT’S THE WORD OF GOD!
Where few go, including those professing to be Christians. Where few truly pray upon, meditate upon, study, and spend time to chew on its meat, to the sweet marrow of each part and bone within.
And no amount of preparation, resources, study, reading will aid us unless we then APPLY what we’ve read, meditated upon, studied and prayed about from the word of God. APPLICATION is key.
If you do not want to hear some wonderful hymns of praise to God our Father, and some Scripture reading, and only want to hear the address, the sermon to the congregation about “Interpreting the Bible” just click on the sermon little gray button, about 22 minutes in and listen and watch.
Hear what pastor Alistair Begg has to say with regard to interpreting, studying the holy word of God.
Get ahold of an approved translation of God’s word, In fact, get at least 2 different translations. To compare. Not making, placing one as being better or more true — but only to compare and thus aid in increasing discernment.
Get ahold of a good concordance. Use it. Use the Bibles.
Settle on a book, a person, a theme within the inerrant infallible living word of God.
Read all references which can be found (concordance, other sources within a good study Bible) and take the time to read, to search out, what precedes what you’re reading and what comes after that corresponds to the person, the theme, the main part in question be it a person or a theme.
Pray and ask for increased wisdom and discernment of God’s word and have faith in the Spirit of God to provide such wisdom and discernment.
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.
James 1:5-8 — English Standard Version
Ask in faith and God will provide.
The word of God is life. The word of God is where we all ought to, need to dwell and reside more. Much, much more.
From my research I could find Jesus quoted the Old Testament 78 times. 26 times from the Pentateuch. Jesus quoted from Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Deuteronomy, Psalms, Proverbs, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, Hosea, Amos, Jonah, Micah and Malachi.
When the Pharisees, scribes, Sadducees would question Jesus, always with their ulterior motives of thinking they could trap Jesus — and the Greek word often used describing their actions translates into “tempt” — Jesus always responded to them with “It is written…” and then He would go on to speak the word of God to them, which, being who they were, they were exceptionally versed in the word of God.
Only they were are whitewashed tombs. Dead dry bones. Blind within and therefore without. They may have known the Scriptures inside and out, backwards and forwards, intellectualizing, reciting, using the Scriptures as a weapon, a power instrument for their own purposes, gain, and hold on people, but they were dead spiritually inside. Blind. Lost.
Merely being able to memorize, recite, or know some verses, some passages. Merely thinking one can approach the word of God intellectually like some mathematics, philosophy, history or such course and study is the absolute wrong approach.
One does not approach God Almighty, God the Creator (the Triune God Who as God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit) created all things that are known in an intellectual manner.
Where is the spiritual part of ones being? Why is the most important part, the part of a human being created by God that goes on into eternity so ignored, so mistreated, so put on the back burner, or left to decay by following false teachings? Or, only being fed a meager diet of watered down milk allowing malnourishment to take over? Why do we place so much emphasis and attention on the physical, the carnal, the earthly and so little on what lies within and goes on for eternity? In one place or another? The spiritual?
If the word was good enough for Jesus my Lord? The word is good enough for me to go to and write, speak to others…”It is written…”
The word of God ought to be the first place we go to in all things. All things. Every day. As course of habit and discipline being a true disciple of Jesus Christ.
Here are some other helps along the way…
