The Seismic Generational Shift in Worldview

The following is a newsletter I received from Len Munsil of the Cultural Research Center at Arizona University in conjunction with George Barna. I’m nothing special. Anyone can sign up to receive these worldview updates. It’s reproduced here, with minor editing (I removed my name and increased the size of the font to find the full-length report on this massive shift in our culture). That’s the only editing. Besides searching and selecting a photo to include in this posting.

ACP — A Crooked Path

Dear _____________,

The latest American Worldview 2021 Release #3: “The Seismic Generational Shift in Worldview: Millennials Seek a Nation Without God, Bible, and Churches,” is available here.

We’re witnessing a seismic, generational worldview shift in our nation.

Unsurprisingly, the deepest cultural changes are being driven by adults between the ages of 18 and 36, popularly known as “Millennials.”

As the latest research from the American Worldview Inventory 2021 shows, compared to older generations, Millennials are far more likely to be among the “Don’ts”—they don’t know, believe, or care whether God exists!

And their beliefs and behaviors reflect a fundamental break with older Americans (55 and above), a majority of whom view God as all-knowing, all-powerful, and just, and as the designer, creator, and sustainer of the Universe.

The latest report from the Cultural Research Center identifies dozens of examples of how this generation is unlike any before it.

Millennials are significantly more likely to believe in horoscopes, Karma, evolution, and reincarnation. And to believe that owning property fosters economic inequality, and to approve of abortion, sex before marriage, and “getting even.” They are significantly less likely to embrace key biblical teachings like the nature of God, “original sin,” salvation, creation, life after death, human purpose, and biblical morality.

Strikingly, while four out of 10 people 55 or older (40%) can be classified as born-again Christians based on their beliefs about personal salvation, just one of every six Millennials (16%) meets the criterion.

As a Christian university president for the past decade and veteran of cultural battles for more than 35 years, I’ve seen dramatic evidence of this shift, and believe now more than ever that we’re in desperate need of an awakening – and a biblical worldview revolution.

Unlike many of their peers in the Millennial generation who are reshaping culture according to their personal preferences, at ACU our students are equipped to transform the culture around them with biblical truth. And through the research and resources of the Cultural Research Center, we’re committed to reaching all generations with the truth presented in Scripture.

I pray you will join our efforts, as we work to restore the biblical worldview in communities and in our nation.

Yours for equipping Christian leaders,

President Len Munsil, B.S., J.D.
