The heart & the ear + fear…
The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge.
Proverbs 18:15 — King James Version
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Proverbs 1:7 — English Standard Version
I’ve heard far too many preachers over the past years do a great disservice and downright false teaching, if they ever venture to preach on Proverbs 1:7, or the “fear of the Lord,” and they all to a one I’ve heard desire to soften the meaning, thusly altering the meaning, thusly putting forth a false teaching.
I’m not saying this is done with evil intent. Or on purpose to mislead. More likely the opposite. Pastors and preachers over the past 50 or so years seem to be in more fear of offending someone sitting in their church than they fear the Lord their God! So, they all want to attach a different meaning, a false definition too what the word “fear” in Proverbs 1:7 means. They don’t want to frighten anyone. They don’t like preaching about sin. They don’t like preaching about hell. They don’t like preaching about judgment. They want everyone to “feel good” and “be happy.” That is not what is in the Bible, what is meant.
I go directly to the Bible.
I know the Old Testament is from ancient Hebrew.
The word “fear” used in Proverbs 1:7 is from יָרֵא (H3373), or yir’ah in Hebrew. yir·ä’ (Key)
fear, terror, fearing
awesome or terrifying thing (object causing fear)
fear (of God), respect, reverence, piety
Does this mean we go around fearful? Yes and no.
Yes, because we ought to come to the best degree of knowledge, wisdom and understanding of God we can with how each of us is measured out. And in so doing come to the understanding and wisdom there is One True Living God. Creator of all things. Omnipotent, omnipresent, and also slow to anger, loving, forgiving, and offering free grace, salvation to those who come to believe with all their heart and soul on the Lord Jesus, and to obey the Lord Jesus and God the Father, in faithful living indwelt through supernatural dramatic regeneration into a renewed of mind and spirit person.
Yes, because unless we come to believe and obey? God has the power over our eternal souls and spirits. You may not like this. You may not agree. You may say you don’t believe any of this. That does not mean it is not true or real. God is real. The Bible is true. Jesus is the Lord. Risen from death after 3 days in the tomb. The Sacrificial Lamb, without sin given up for our sins. Don’t believe this? That does not mean it isn’t true. The Bible is not only the inerrant living and active Word of God, the Bible is the greatest history book ever written as well. It provides accurate, true history past, present and future! No other book can come close.
God created all things. That includes you and me. As in everything.
We each have choice. We each have free will.
We need to fear He Who can throw the eternal spirit and soul into the depths of hell.
That is terror. Beyond the comprehension of any mind on earth. The terror of having to endure all that a very real and existing hell is and means, even though unbelievers such as John Lennon and legions more have written or said there is no hell.
There is a hell.
There is a heaven.
There is an eternity for every person’s spirit and soul.
There is a Living God to fear. To fear but to love more than anything else. To trust more than anything else. To REVERE, as one of the meanings of the Hebrew word. To reverence in awesome wonder! To humble ourselves before while yet going boldly before His throne!
To fear DISAPPOINTING God our Father!
By disobeying and causing God our Father to feel sadness for our disobeying when He has made everything wonderful for us. When He has made the way of salvation for us, freely giving us His grace, mercy, and love. Forgiving us our sins.
Yes, we have much to fear.
No, we do not need to go about cowering, or in fear as the world fears things.
God is a known Supernatural Being. God exists. Just look around! God is three distinct Supernatural Beings in One Godhead, a Trinity. God the Father, Jesus the Lord and Son, and the Holy Spirit.
The Word of God is the most real, most true book ever written.
There is much to fear, while not living in fear.
If you understand this then you know exactly what is meant in my putting those words down in that order.
If you do not understand?
Then please, dear one, pause. Quiet your mind. If you have a Bible nearby please get it and have it close at hand. Ready to open.
Pray. Pray in a quiet secret place. To God. To Jesus. Asking for the Holy Spirit to come and to help you. To guide you.
Even be silent for a long time.
Pray large. Pray believing God is hearing.
Open the Bible. Slowly read asking God to reveal what it is you need most. Have faith the Lord will show you.
Then do not live in fear as the world knows and lives in fear.
Come to fear the Lord in understanding the how, what and why those who are true disciples of the Lord Jesus love and fear the Lord our God.
It’s quite different.
Trust. Pause. Quiet. Listen. Believe.
