Rise Up From the Ash Heap

by Ken Pullen

This was composed during the night of Friday, July 19th, 2019

Holy Scripture appears in Italics & is from the English Standard Version

O, dry bones

aimless lives drifting through

this most important gift from God

called life

O, lost denying lying on the smoldering ash heap

buried under the aimless time you toss

never heeding He who was nailed upon the cross

a darkened pile of dirty ash is what you reap

having sown

aimless, lost, rebellious foolish one

self-indulgent worldly pleasures

what is daily devoured, sought, bought

gluttony of sin

taking into further depths rather than rising from

passing years fly along

young man

young woman

you boy

you girl

(those are the only beings possible no matter what the world’s lies say)

you sir, successful, fading, failing, failing, graying, yielding, bending

you madam, of the world, treading, pushing, worrying

(archaic you say, I may be but if I’m lying tell me so, for I am no nearer perfect than any other)

what is the sound sent to heaven each is sending

all ages

considered Christian

considered every category

way under the sun

through moonlit nights

our Father has made for our delight & blessing

your eyes placed your life leading

do you know

do you really

do you care

ignoring He who upon that cross bleeding

in borrowed tomb dead to rise

the third day

promise fulfilled

life eternal

the faithful

with passionate commitment

rise up from the ash heap all ye thinking so holy

rise up from the ash heap all those thinking the world is your oyster

from fleeting pleasure never pleasing enough

for gain, all the same as above taking you further down

for fame

every time measured imagining getting closer

never enough

disappointment in every turn

keep this up until last breath

and you will burn

since time and again never learned

a thing

lost one

thinking in the world, around the next bend

you’ve found the answer

only coming up empty

times time again

always at end of day found lying in the ash heap

your life were painted how would it appear

in what kind of frame

do you continue to stain

that spirit breathed into you by none other than everyone’s Creator

on knees before the Lord how will He measure

or are you one of those who live to roister

spitting on the Truth, the Way, the Light and the Life

O, dry bones

rise up from the ash heap

this very day

hasten to be His

cling to His gift of grace

as the greatest treasure found ‘or all the earth

tied securely to His heart, His voice, His promises

for this is what the Lord has given

in His supreme sacrifice

from darkness lying in waste

in a sea of lifeless ashes

come into the Light of the fine day the Lord has made

all things good, all things pure, all things true…

walk the way of the Lord one step at a time upon the journey given

be it long, suffering, painful, trying

fighting the good fight

towards eternal reward

keep the prize

the Lord

His ways

always within your eyes

Heart of hearts

on fire blazing greater

and greater

growing on the journey not fading ember

turned to ash

Strain towards the goal…

Not that I have already obtained this

or am already perfect,

but I press on to make it my own,

Christ Jesus has made me his own.

Brothers, (sisters)

I do not consider that I have made it my own.

But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead,

I press on toward the goal for the prize

call of God in Christ Jesus.

Let those of us

who are mature

think this way,

and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal that also to you.

Only let us hold true to what we have attained.

Brothers, (sisters)

join in imitating me,

and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us.

For many, of whom I have often told you

even with tears,

walk as enemies of the cross of Christ.

Their end is destruction,

their god is their belly,

and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things.

But our citizenship is in heaven,

and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,

who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body,

by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.

my brothers, (sisters)

whom I love

and long for,

my joy and crown,

stand firm thus in the Lord, my beloved.

Rise up from the ash heap…

rise up to Jesus

make it the one thing to do

the one thing to do

the one thing to do

in all things

all day

all night

every day

every night

do one thing

rise up from the ash heap and unto the Lord
