Obsession With Obscenities

“The foolish and wicked practice of profane cursing and swearing,” declared George Washington, “is a vice so mean and low that every person of sense and character detests and despises it.”
Theodore Roosevelt concurred: “Profanity is the parlance of the fool. Why curse when there is such a magnificent language with which to discourse?”
But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.
The idea for this column presented itself when I was reading an article posted on the FrontPageMag.com website, a source I have frequently reprinted articles from. Upon beginning the article, written by Mark Tapson, and titled “The Left’s Obsession With Obscenity,” I had every intention on reprinting Mr. Tapson’s article until I read further into it and came upon language — not his language, mind you, but examples Mr. Tapson pulled from to support his argument — and realized that article as written had no place on A Crooked Path.
I just was not comfortable republishing it here with the profane and obscene language used in it to illustrate Mr. Tapson’s points.
If anyone is remotely aware and paying attention and they have the gift of hearing they know the immense erosion and decline in American language. In speech, in writing — in every aspect of American life. Positions, people, institutions, places, sources which never would have sunk to the putrid stinking gutter now toss out obscenities and profanities like breath and punctuation marks and call it discourse, call it communicating, call it “passionate intensity” when it is only ignorance, laziness, weakness, wrath, animosity, and all things foolish and sinful which have welled up in them and grown being sown in by their ugly tongues.
My mother, a very wise woman who only had an eighth grade education, told me when I was a young boy;
“People who use foul language, people who curse and swear are only showing how ignorant they are due to not having a well developed vocabulary in order to get their point across without using obscenities.”
Somehow it became cool, accepted, the only and right way to speak, write and communicate in America. The erosion and decline of language and the great rise in speaking and writing profanities in all walks of life at all times without thought go hand in hand with America’s moral and spiritual erosion and decline.
As the murder of babies — abortion was made lawful — as sex with anyone at any time just have sexual intercourse with whomever for the momentary physical pleasure no matter the consequences, no matter morals, as drug use spread, as disrespect became the order of the day and the smell of rebellion filled the air so did the constant sound of swearing, cursing, and using profanities fill the air replacing intelligent discourse.
Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
Comedians used to resort to their creative minds and actually work to be funny.
Then they began using the “F” word every third word, the audiences roared with laughter and applauded as they were being constantly dumbed down and made more illiterate and vile.
Films, books, movies — every aspect of American life in every form, in every institution adopted the parlance of the fool, revealing their ignorance, wickedness and lack of sense and character, their utter lack of self-control and ignorance of the English language.
This became especially true within the highly educated. They embraced profanities as they had embraced drug use and every immorality under the sun. Reducing themselves to the gutter, wearing their swearing like a badge of accomplishment rather than shame revealing their ignorance as should have been.
Our decline only accelerates.
The erosion to the point it has worn away the very foundations and soon, oh so very soon it shall all collapse around everyone.
Language not only is one form of human communication — language builds character, it builds bonds and communities. It builds trust. It not only informs it is the glue which holds things together.
As our language erodes so, too, does every other aspect of human life on earth. It’s all connected and inter-related. Every thread of our so-called culture woven into the fabric of what our daily lives are.
Not long ago, a few years back, I stopped in a convenient store near the house I lived in at the time to find the female clerk behind the counter broke down weeping and totally distraught. She was a woman of about 45 years of age. My immediate thought was she had either just been robbed and the scare made her break down in sobbing, or a customer had just done an inappropriate thing to her, or she had received some devastating news while at work.
As she was crying, her entire body heaving from the strain, I asked her, “What is wrong, what happened? Is there something I can do?”
And the woman replied, through her tears, as she wiped her face, “I can’t take it anymore. I just can’t take it anymore!”
“What happened?” I asked.
“I can’t take it anymore…every single day these kids come in from the school next door…”
There was an elementary school right next to the store.
“… and every day these seven, eight, nine year old kids come in trying to buy beer, wine, and cigarettes and every day I tell them they can’t buy those things and to leave the store, and, and then they begin with hurling nothing but the F word at me, or using that vile and nasty C word they learned to call women, and every other disgusting word I’ve ever heard! I can’t take it anymore! It’s every single day after school, every single day!”
That was a number of years ago and we’ve only declined, eroded and gotten much worse.
In the article on FrontPageMag.com by Mr. Tapson he recounts the large number of household name so-called “journalists” in broadcast TV, in print, who get on Twitter, or some other medium and hurl out the F word and every other obscenity under the sun as if it is normal, approved, accepted proper language.
And the sad fact is in morally corrupted, perverted and spiritually diseased America, in lazy, foolish serving Satan rather than God ignorance replacing sense, civility, courtesy, decorum, tact, reason, logic, and intelligence such degrading, vile, foolish evil language HAS BECOME the norm, approved, and considered proper. Why if one doesn’t speak or write in such a manner people look at you as if you’re from another planet or foreign country!
I know people, sadly, people who I do not spend much time around mind you, who use the F word and other profanities like periods at the end of their every sentence.
And they think nothing of it.
Lazy, foolish, profane, weak, ignorant, vile, people of low character and lacking sense. The darkness within them is revealed. Any light that might possibly be in them is soiled with the soot of their smutty vile tongues and ignorant speech and writing.
All things clean, pure, decent and right are reviled and hated by the purveyors of foul language. It isn’t only the leftists, the liberals, the progressives which resort and ascribe to this rancid and ignorant philosophy. Many in our so-called culture despise cleanliness, purity, decency, and the rightness of God. Of how the majority used to live and conduct themselves in daily life, in their speech and writing — their verbal and written intercourse with other human beings.
Decency is now reviled and hated.
God and what is right is reviled and hated.
Cleanliness is viewed as weakness and mocked. If one doesn’t use obscenities and profanities they are laughed at and considered uncool, unhip, not in the know, not with the program.
Too bad. To sad. For them.
Ignorance is NOT bliss. Ignorance is, well, just ignorance.
The erosion and decline of our language, our morals is not progress. Anything but.
What we write, how we speak is interwoven with every aspect of our overall total decline and turning from God and our language merely illustrates how far we have turned from God, what we allow in our lives, how numb and dumb, how foolish we have become, how far we have fallen.
When will the obscenities and profanities lessen or cease?
When the Lord Jesus returns in the clouds and every eye can see, every ear hear, and then every vile, disgusting, evil, rancid dark diseased lazy ignorant foolish tongue will be motionless and silent in the mouth and no obscenities will be uttered or heard from the fear within those who lived their lives in the world, of the world, pleasing the world in every way they lived rather than living to please the Lord our God.
And their tongues and lips will fail them, just as their bowels and bladders will as well as they shake, tremble, fall, and die in fear. Silenced at last.
At times I think on those seven, eight, and nine year olds in that store. Their influences. Their parents. The entertainment they turned to. What and how they were taught and raised. And how swiftly our nation fell, how quickly the foundations were eroded and the destruction nearly complete. How fast the world had changed for the worse in my lifetime.
And it’s only going to get worse from this point on. Will come a time a true believer won’t be able to listen to, or read most things of the world without it troubling their spirit, as the article by Mr. Tapson troubled mine — and if you count yourself a Christian? A true believer? A true disciple of Jesus the Christ? And your spirit is not stirred and troubled, an uneasiness and not right feeling is present within you when such language is spoken or written?
I hope you will solemnly, seriously take inventory and inquire as to where and with whom your spirit and allegiance truly reside? With this sin-filled, foolish vile world and their ways? Or with the Lord and His ways?
Prior to becoming truly renewed of mind and spirit, a new man in Christ I used profane and obscene language as almost all of and in the world do.
Upon my conversion I didn’t even need to think about, or be conscious of refraining from using such language. I knew, in part, due to this, I had been truly renewed.
Over time though with certain people in my life I have grown lax at times and not mentioned to them how their language is offensive, or I have resorted to using crude language myself. Not resorting to obscenities and profanities, but becoming weak and resorting to crude words which I do not feel right within my spirit and soul to utter or write. I did not resort to using foul language, the F word and such as that, but I noticed on occasion my language becoming cruder and lazier than it ought to be. And that troubled me. That is unacceptable. It is unacceptable unto the Lord and was unacceptable to me. One cannot be a light and have darkness within them. I did something about it.
I hope and pray, dear reader, if you are an unbeliever still, or dear brothers and sisters in the faith, of the remnant of true believers your hearts and spirits will be pricked as was mine by allowing through time and growing a bit lax certain language in ones life we ought never allow. We should never do anything which grieves the Spirit of God, which grieves Jesus our Lord, which grieves the Holy Spirit. No part of the Triune God can have any part in sin or evil, and if we desire to have the fullness of the Holy Spirit within us we cannot grow lax even in language, in what we allow because it will, it does grieve the Holy Spirit and He cannot be any part of sin or evil, and He will shrink from and withdraw from us if we turn to the ways of the world forsaking the instruction of God’s Word!
It isn’t only the left which is obsessed with obscenities — it has its roots, its foundation in evil and obscenities, profanities, cursing and swearing only aid the Adversary in his spiritual war against God, Christ, the Holy Spirit and those who commit their lives to the Lord and turn to God to live for Christ in faith.
Do not give that old dragon the devil so much as one inch, not one word to hold against you. Ever.
A Tree Recognized by its Fruit
Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit. O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.
Matthew 12: 33-37
Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.
Taming the Tongue
My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation. For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body. Behold, we put bits in the horses’ mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body. Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth. Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind: But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter? Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.
But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.
2 Timothy 2:16
Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.
